Emmy's Misstep

By Suzanne Spurgeon  September 22, 2013

With a government shutdown looming, terror unfolding at a mall in Kenya, and the Syrian debate raging; watching the Emmys is a good way to escape our global realities for a few hours.

Like millions of TV fans, I'll be watching tonight and second guessing the Academy voters and critiquing the fashion.  What I do not plan to do is decide which departed celebrity deserves more attention and screen time.  I find it sad that there is a public debate over the inclusion of Glee's Cory Monteith in a special memorium tribute.  Jack Klugman's son has weighed in and so has Cory's mother.  Family members shouldn't have to go through this.  Producers created this controversy and now are left trying to justify their decisions.  Klugman is part of the group remembrance, but not singled out.

What's wrong with one tribute for all those who died?  Even then some will go unnoticed, but to set up a two-tier remembrance this year, is a truly bad idea.  No doubt the segment will be moving but let's hope next year, producers will be more thoughtful.
