Self-made Woman

By Suzanne Spurgeon  May 27, 2009

The mudslinging has begun.  A day after President Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor to be the next justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Newt Gingrich is calling on her to withdraw.  Why?  Gingrich calls her a "racist" because of comments she made years ago suggesting that a Latina woman may reach a better judicial decision than a white man.  I get what she was saying.  We all bring our life experiences to work.  And that's why it is so important to have a diverse workforce.  It makes us all better.  Why should it be different for judges? Sotomayor comes from very humble beginnings and has accomplished much in her 54 years. Of course her journey impacts how she thinks.  This does not mean Sotomayor cannot be impartial or is not up to the position for which she is nominated.

I look forward to the confirmation process and hearing the debate.  What I do not look forward to is the weeks of name calling in the media.  It's easy to sound off  in clever sound bites.  Withholding judgment until the facts are in is so much harder.
