Media Training: Interview Goals

  November 22, 2022

People do media interviews for a variety of reasons. Like?

  • Increase visibility to boost their business
  • Sell a book
  • Right a wrong
  • Community service
  • Personal goal
  • Give an eyewitness account
  • Ego boost

Some recent examples in the news:

  • Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo did an explosive interview with Piers Morgan.  He criticized Manchester United's manager, saying he didn't have any respect for him.  His bosses didn't take it well.  Today both sides announced he's leaving the team.  Was Ronaldo's motive to force a management change or to get out of his contract?
  • Former VP Mike Pence is making the network rounds and naturally is being asked about former President Trump.  His new book has just been published so it's not surprising that he's sitting for interviews now. He may have another motivation--testing the waters of a potential 2024 presidential run.  Whatever his reasons for doing interviews now, he's a good get because there is plenty of interest in his first-hand account of the attack on the Capitol.
  • Following the tragic shootings at Club Q in Colorado Springs, Colorado survivors are giving interviews.  So is at least one of the hero's of the night.  Sometimes talking about tragedies can be cathartic.  It can also help the community as it grieves.  Survivor stories are important.
  • FTX's former front man, Sam Bankman-Fried, spoke to the New York Times following the collapse of the cryptocurrency firm. Despite losing a ton of money and facing investigation he decided to talk.  He said he's had no trouble sleeping and things could be worse.  I find those comments insensitive given the gravity of the situation for investors.  I suspect his attorneys will advise him to stop talking.  To date, FTX's celebrity endorsers are keeping quiet.

Before you agree to any media interview have your goals in place.  The media outlet is getting your story or opinion for its readers, listeners or viewers.  That's important to them.  What's important to you?

Begin your media journey by learning to be a good storyteller.  It's a vital element of media interview training.
