Debating the GOP debate

By Suzanne Spurgeon  October 29, 2015

I spent more than twenty years working in the "mainstream media" and I know it is easy for politicians to attack the media when they want to avoid answering tough questions.  That said, I think last night's GOP debate hosted by CNBC set journalism back.  There were just too many snarky questions that gave politicians every reason to criticize the media. The best sound bite of the night came from Ted Cruz who said, "...this is not a cage match."

Not every tough question is "gotcha journalism," and presidential candidates are so rehearsed they should be able to answer just about any question a reporter asks.  Much has been said about how democratic presidential hopeful Michael Dukakis responded to a question by CNN's Bernie Shaw during a debate years ago.  He gave a rote response on his death penalty position but missed a big opportunity to humanize himself.  Remember this exhange?

As a viewer and voter, when I watch a debate I want to learn more about the candidates' positions. Stick to the biggies. Fantasy football is not a pressing issue in my book.
